Colts' Freeland wins Triway Invite 3,200 despite medley of maladies

WOOSTER TWP. — Name the ailment and Riley Freeland had it Saturday afternoon — upset stomach, body aches and even a headache.

The Cloverleaf senior overcame it all, winning the 3,200-meter run and helping the Colts tie for fifth at Triway Invitational.

“It took all the guts that I had, because I feel absolutely awful,” Freeland said. “That took every last bit.”

Indeed it did, as the All-Gazette selection bounced back from a tough loss in the 1,600 with a gutsy performance, as she fought through every lap for the win in 11:36.03 over Woodridge’s Clare Willett (11:46.92).

Freeland’s victory helped Cloverleaf tie with Rittman at 46 points. Orrville won the 16-team event with 92. Buckeye finished 13th.

The 3,200 was exactly what Freeland needed after finishing 4 seconds behind Michelle Hostettler of West Holmes in the 1,600.

“I knew I had to do something great,” she said. “Going into this I was like ‘All right, it’s got to be the best race I have,’ I needed to lay it on the line, because I need to have a good day somehow.

“The last mile, I felt pretty confident and I didn’t hear (Willet) so close, so I was trying to gauge where she was. The last mile I was more relaxed, but I pushed it really hard.”

Cloverleaf’s Jenna Oliver was fourth in the 1,600 in 5:32.78, while Sarah Keener took fifth in the 200 (28.76). Katelyn Young and Lisa Wangler picked up points in the field, with Young placing third in the discus and Wangler fourth in the shot put.

Every point was crucial without Tommie Kurtz and Zana Ross. Kurtz has been sidelined with an injury, while Ross was playing in a soccer tournament.

“It was an opportunity to get a bunch of young kids in and evaluate things before the end of the season,” coach Garth Gucker said. “(Freeland) proved why she was an All-Ohioan today. All of our distance kids ran well. There are a lot of things to be proud of.”

The Bucks had a handful of top performances, led by Katie Lyons taking third in the 400. Lyons clocked 1:05.01 despite 10-15 mph wind hitting runners in the race as they made the final turn.

“It was pretty good with the temperature and everything,” Lyons said. “Usually the last 100, I just go and don’t think about anything or worry about the wind. I just go look at the finish line, look at the girl ahead of me and try and get there.”

Olivia Hartley picked up fourth in the high jump, while Brooke Franz (3,200) and the 4x400 relay were sixth.

Buckeye’s boys team took sixth with 52 points. Smithville ran away with the title over the host Titans 105-84, while Cloverleaf locked up 11th.

Another strong day from Justin Canedy led the Bucks, as the junior cleared 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump and won a thrilling 100 in 11.34.

Canedy needed everything to hold off Triway’s Dylan Eshler for the win by 0.02 seconds. The results weren’t posted until well after the race, as officials reviewed the finish.

“We were neck-and-neck going down there, but you just have to keep pushing,” Canedy said. “I think my lean at the end got him. I like close races, because it makes me feel like I’m running faster. It just pushes me.”

Senior Richard Van Boxel had a personal-record 13-6 in the pole vault but finished second to Rittman’s Mikey McDermott on misses. Van Boxel also ran on the fourth-place 4x1 with Canedy, Michael Doerge and Josh England.

“I think it was good, because it’s pretty cold out,” Van Boxel said. “Being able to jump a new PR when it’s cold just sets new goals to jump even higher, knowing that I can.”

Keaton Sandor was fifth in both hurdle events. Sandor finished the 110s in 16.74 before clocking 44.99 in the 300s that was loaded with state-caliber talent in Smithville’s Cole Smith and Woodridge’s Jacob Mally, who finished 1-2 in both races.

“I felt really good today, and in the prelims I felt really quick, but there’s definitely really good competition in this meet,” Sandor said. “I knew I just had to step it up with a faster time in the (110) finals, it wasn’t enough to get in the top three, but it was still good.”

Cloverleaf’s Zack Munchick and Jacob Scheck placed in the 100 and 200. Munchick was fifth in the 100 and seventh in the 200, while Scheck placed fifth in the 200 and seventh in the 100.

The 4x1 relay of Munchick, Scheck, John Manzuk and Eli Haynes was fifth.
