ELYRIA — Buckeye senior Eric Bartos has been stinging a bit since a disappointing fifth-place finish at the Division II state tournament last weekend.

Some of the pain was alleviated Thursday night as Bartos was named the Division II Wrestler of the Year at the Lorain County Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association All-Star meet at Elyria High.

“I’m not going to lie, I was pretty disappointed after the state tournament,” Bartos said. “I just didn’t finish as high as I’d hoped. But a lot of people told me, ‘You had a great career,’ and I did. I stepped back and I looked at it, and I can’t be mad at myself.

“It feels great. Winning the Division II Wrestler of the Year award shows me that every year I’ve put in the work and that I’ve had a successful year overall.”

Bartos finished as a three-time state placer — fourth in 2016 and seventh in ’15 — and holds the Bucks’ record for career wins with 173, which only trails Wadsworth’s Nick Tavanello (179) and Brad Squire (176) in Medina County history.

Bartos also earned sectional and district championships on his way to finishing with 51 victories, which passes Squire (50) for the area’s top single-season performance.

“I’m happy I left my mark at Buckeye and hopefully they’ll remember me for awhile, but I’m just glad that I could help the program come up,” he said. “Although I’m leaving now, and there’s still a lot of talent left, I’m glad that I could lead the charge kind of, you know. It’s been a great season with the guys, and the memories made you can’t beat. I love it.

“I’ve been an influence to a lot of younger kids and it feels real good to be a big player and a part of wrestling history in Ohio, especially this region.”

Notes

  • Bartos was also the Division II recipient of the Frank Fiore/John Hollett Memorial scholarship.
  • Bartos’ uncle, Steve Bartos, was inducted into the LCWCOA Hall of Fame during the All-Star meet. Steve Bartos was a two-time state qualifier and placed fourth at the 1987 state tournament while with the Bucks. He helped develop the Evolve Wrestling Alliance youth program at Inner Circle Wrestling and has coached the Buckeye youth program for the past six years.
