AURORA — Sometimes it’s not how you look when you’re at the top. It’s what you do after the tumble.
Coach John Gramuglia was interested in seeing what his Wadsworth wrestling team would do Saturday at the Suburban League Wrestling Tournament after a tough loss earlier in the week at the State Duals.
The Grizzlies didn’t just answer the door at the SLT, they broke it down and clinched the outright title to grab their 25th straight conference crown.
“We challenged them a little bit,” Gramuglia said. “We told them they didn’t have the confidence they should have (against Elyria at the State Duals). We were disappointed that they doubted themselves in a close match. We’re better than that.”
Wadsworth is much better after another solid showing at the SLT.
Michael North (126 pounds), Cody Surratt (160), Joey Baughman (170), Alex Jones (182) and Jordan Earnest (285) won titles. Jimmy Carmany (113), Luke Baughman (132), Zain Tittle (138) and Clay McComas (220) were second.
Add placings by Matt McMillen (3rd, 120), Conner Clark (3rd, 145), Chris Suarez (3rd, 195), Hunter Griffin (5th, 106), Mason McMillen (5th, 152) and every Grizzly finished in the top five.
That helped Wadsworth outlast Brecksville, which had five champions and six other placers, by 56 points.
“We really wanted as a team to be the first to get to the State Duals in Columbus, so when we fell short, our next goal was (the individual state tournament),” Jones said. “We kept working hard in the room to prepare for it. Winning this is a huge sense of pride. Not only does it mean something for this year, but for the past 25 years. We represent all of them.”
Pride beamed on the face of Surratt, who won his second conference title in three years. In a battle of returning state placers, the senior didn’t allow an offensive point in a 7-2 win over Stow’s Joey Andrassy.
It kicked off three straight title wins for Wadsworth.
“Our guys really showed up this weekend,” Surratt said. “This is the last thing we can build off of. After this we have sectionals. This is the last thing to really get that ball rolling downhill.”
While the individual postseason doesn’t start until Feb. 25, Wadsworth knows it has everything it needs to not just get to state, but succeed.
“Coach (Gramuglia) has coached us well enough to push ourselves to the limit,” North said. “That helps out a lot. We talked about this all week. We have the skill and the strength to win this tournament. It’s obviously a big deal.”
Highland’s showing can’t be discounted, as the Hornets had four wrestlers among the eight they brought to the tournament place in the top six.
Andrew Plevris (152) finished second, with Andrew Linder (4th, 138), Brandon Yu (6th, 126) and Josh Kedzior (6th, 160) reaching the podium.
“This is big for me,” Plevris said. “I was happy with it. I feel like I’ve improved over the season. This is going to make me work hard. There’s confidence here, for sure. It’s going to help.”
