CHATHAM TWP. — A garbage truck eastbound on Spencer Lake Road traveled off the road into a ditch, pulling down power lines Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Ohio Highway Patrol troopers who responded to the 2:20 p.m. accident call, said the driver, whose name was not immediately available, was not injured but he was trapped in the truck because of how it landed in the ditch in the 9700 block of Spencer Lake Road.

Troopers said the driver from Rumpke Trash Collection in Mansfield lost control of the garbage truck due to the uneven terrain on the side of the road. There is a ditch between the road and private property that runs almost the length of the road.

The truck’s tires got caught in the ditch, causing the vehicle to tip and take down a wooden pole attached to the power lines with it, troopers said.

Members of the Lodi Fire Department cut out the front windshield of the truck and the driver was able to crawl out.

Lorain-Medina Rural Electric workers were called in to handle the downed power lines. The power on Spencer Lake Road was shut off while LMRE crews helped to repair the power lines and erect a new pole.

“We appreciate the quick response of the Ohio State Patrol, the first responders and our team,” said Randy Broadright, area safety manager for Rumpke’s east area. “The safety of our customers and team members is a top priority at Rumpke. We are grateful that there are no injuries… .”

The road was closed for at least four hours.

Members of the Chatham Fire Department assisted with road blocks near the accident, which remains under investigation.
