MEDINA — The Medina Board of Education unanimously agreed to pay raises in a two-year contract extension with the Medina City Teachers Association.
Superintendent Aaron Sable said Monday night there would be a 2 percent increase in the first year and a 1 percent increase in the second for the union’s 432 members. The contract runs July 1 through June 30, 2019.
“I would like to commend MCTA leadership,” he said. “I know (MCTA President) David Hamman is here tonight. The amount of time we talked about what’s best for kids and what’s best structurally throughout this process impressed me. Dollars and cents were part of this agreement.”
Sable said he hopes to sit down with MCTA leadership in the near future and discuss the length of class periods at the high school. They are 44 minutes and he wants to extend that.
Looking ahead at all its collective bargaining situations, Sable wanted to spread out the expiration dates on the contracts.
“It allows us to space out our contracts so we don’t have to do them all at once,” he said. “It aligns the negotiation process after the teachers.”
- The Medina City Schools Psychologists Association has a new four-year deal, July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2020. It passed 4-1, with board member Ron Ross the lone dissenter.
“The (eight) school psychologists have developed their own union,” Sable said.
Sable said they’ll get a 2 percent increase, followed by 1.5 percent increases in the second, third and fourth years.
The contract is not retroactive to the 2016-17 year. So psychologists will receive a one-time lump sum equal to a 2 percent raise from Aug. 1, the ratification date.
“We spent some time in negotiations with them and initiated a contract with them,” he said. “Their pay is similar to what it currently is. There are built-in increases.”
- The board approved a 2 percent pay raise for all administrators, excluding the superintendent and Treasurer David Chambers, for the 2017-18 school year.
- College preparatory math has been recommended at the middle and high schools for next school year. It will be adopted in regular classes at the high school and in honors classes at the middle school and high school.
CPM is being taught in regular math class and pre-Algebra in grades six through eight at Claggett and A.I Root middle schools. Based on the work of the textbook review committee, individual conversations with teachers and a visit to Solon High School, administrators said they had support from teachers to adopt and implement CPM at the high school.
The CPM materials will be available for public viewing for 30 days before formal board adoption.
- The board approved a sponsorship agreement between Medina Schools and Partner Marketing LLC, of Wadsworth, to obtain sponsors for placement inside the Medina Community Recreation Center.
“This is the city’s initiative that we’re going to benefit from,” Sable said. “Any funds we receive from sponsorship will go into a joint account that we have with the city to operate and repair the rec center.”
- The board approved a five-year lease with School House Scoops, 686 Lafayette Road, Medina. The proprietor is former Medina teacher Mike Eleo. “We were just going to knock it down,” Sable said. “Now it serves a purpose.”
