MEDINA — There are certain wrestling invitationals that just suit teams better than others.

For Wadsworth, it’s the Medina Invitational Tournament.

While many invites fit like a glove for the national power, the 43rd annual MIT fell right in line with that as the Grizzlies repeated as champion.

Unlike last year where they needed Jordan Earnest to win the last match of the day, Wadsworth lapped the field Thursday, beating its closest competitor, Massillon Perry, by 46½ points.

“For a young team that started four freshmen, where a lot of people would say, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to win a tournament,’ it shows how talented they are,” Grizzlies coach John Gramuglia said. “Three of them placed (Logan Messer, 3rd, 132 pounds, Landon Hacker, 5th, 120, Mikey Lewarchick 7th, 106). That shows their progress. Our other kids keep making little improvements and staying sharp. Over the Christmas break that’s a big goal of ours. It’s to make a big stride without school and academics. We all feed off each other. That’s the fun part of it.”

There were champions as well as Luke Baughman (138), Michael North (145), Joey Baughman (182) and Earnest (285) took home titles as the only Medina County wrestlers to stand on the top step of the podium.

While wins always help team races take care of themselves, so does staying sharp year after year.

Top-three finishers the three years they have been at the MIT, Wadsworth has found success by staying a step ahead of the competition at every point.

“There’s lots of pride in this one,” said Luke Baughman, who was the tournament MVP runner-up. “It shows a lot about how tough our team is this year. We have lots of guys that will make runs for the state championship and lots of guys that will support them and get to state and be state qualifiers and placers. We have a lot of potential to do something great.”

Brunswick’s Logan Heil (120) and Matt Fields (132) joined Brady Chrisman (170) as runners-up, while Wadsworth’s Clay McComas (220) was third.

The underlying story of the day may have been Cloverleaf, as Rocco Pearce (4th, 182), Caleb Cass (5th, 160), Bryce Hart (5th, 170) and Cory Stallings (6th, 195) bumped the Colts ahead of Brunswick and Medina to finish 12th in the 44-team field.

That put them behind only Wadsworth in the county race and had coach Cloverleaf Bob Scandlon looking forward to climbing another rung on the ladder of success.

“Today was a big step,” he said. “I’m definitely impressed with the way the kids wrestled. This is a big confidence builder. All the team talked about was how hard the MIT was. That we were able to come in here and place 12th out of 44 schools, gives them all the confidence they’ll have to have for sectionals, Portage Trail Conference and everything we’ve been working for all year.”

Brunswick’s Derek Fields (126), Buckeye’s Jarod Setliff (170) and Medina’s Lee Coleman (285) were fifth with Bees standout Ian Senz (138) finishing sixth.

Jared Dressler (Medina, 120) and Mike Clark (Buckeye, 138) finished seventh. Jake Bartinelli (Buckeye, 126), Nick Neitenbach (Buckeye, 152), Isaiah Helton (Buckeye, 195) and Eddie Sevastos (Brunswick, 220) were eighth.
