GRANGER TWP. — Highland’s doubles teams both claimed runner-up finishes Monday, leading the Hornets to a third-place showing at the Suburban League American Conference boys tennis tournament.
Sophomore Tyler Erba and junior Nate Gillin upset No. 2 seeds Andrew Leffler and Clark Evans of Copley 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the first doubles semifinals before dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Revere’s Esa Malik and Ben Lazbin in the championship match.
In the second doubles semis, junior Logan Spittle and freshman A.J. Cooper outlasted Aurora’s Zach Sender and Pranav Jayakumar 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. They fell in the final 6-1, 6-0 to Copley’s Holden Schmid and Jun Sun.
The Minutemen edged the Indians 35-34 for top honors at the tourney, while Highland was next with 29 points. Those squads also finished 1-2-3 in the final conference standings, which include regular season results.
Hornets seniors Matt Erba and Kyle Yamat joined their doubles teams in winning 2-of-3 matches at the event. Erba finished fifth at first singles and Yamat was third at the second spot, matching their seeds.
Erba rolled past Tallmadge’s Patrick Rotunda 8-1 in his final contest, while Yamat beat Aurora’s Andrew Sobodosh 6-4, 6-1.
Highland sophomore Pavel Belyanskiy was fourth at third singles, going 0-2. The tournament began Saturday, but rain prevented play from continuing after the first round.
