CARLISLE TWP. — The Buckeye girls cross country team entered the Patriot Athletic Conference Meet seeking to end the regular season with a strong finish.

It’s safe to say the Bucks met their expectations.

Led by senior Maddie Roschival, who finished sixth in a time of 20:47.3, the Bucks were second Thursday at the Lorain County Equestrian Center. They will head to the Great Lakes Conference next fall.

“We came in ranked second. I knew on a good day we’d have a chance to finish first, but I also knew Lutheran West was ranked pretty well ahead of us, so second is a good finish,” Bucks coach Renee Harden said. “The girls were amazing today. They are so awesome. This is the best girls team I’ve had here. They all love the sport, they have a great work ethic and they are very supportive of each other.”

A ninth-place finish by senior Brooke Franz (21:45.4) and a 10th from sophomore Morgan Sejka (21:57.3) gave Buckeye depth in a field of 58 runners.

“It was a difficult race, but I just fought through it,” Roschival said. “It was a little chilly, so I had to warm up more, and the competition was really tough in this race.

“I feel pretty good about my time. I almost set a PR, but I didn’t. It’s OK, though, because I know I ran well.”

The Bucks’ fourth runner, senior Sara Koeth, finished 19th in 23:00.8.

“It was important to have a good team result today to build momentum,” Roschival said. “We want to try to make it to regionals this year, and we know the competition is going to be really rough.”

Lutheran West won the race with 43 points, 18 ahead of Buckeye.

Black River’s top finisher was junior Sarah Kozik (22:03.6) in 13th. The Pirates finished seventh.

Youth was served in the boys race, as the top Medina County finishers were freshmen. Black River’s Jared Bradford was 11th in 17:41.5, while Buckeye’s Mason Kabat was 15th in 18:02.6.

The Bucks finished fifth and Black River ninth. Fairview won with 47 points.
