BRUNSWICK — Andy Prostor knows a thing or two because he’s seen a thing or two.

The senior again showed how important he is to the Medina boys soccer team by scoring yet another game-winning goal and throwing in a hat trick to boot.

The performance came Wednesday, as the Bees beat Olmsted Falls for the second season in a row to advance to the Division I, Region 2 final.

A 3-0 win over the Bulldogs added to a laundry list of accomplishments for the 2016 All-Gazette forward.

“I think last year because he didn’t play deep in the playoffs (Prostor was hurt), he knows this is his last go-around,” Medina coach Simon Spelling said. “I think he showed today the quality of player he is. He had four chances and scored three goals, and let me tell you, they were three cracking goals.”

Prostor burst onto the scene two years ago with a game-winner in double-overtime against Copley during a 3-2 Brunswick District final victory.

Prostor hasn’t stopped since.

Against Olmsted Falls (18-2), Prostor scored his second game-winner of the postseason after a second-half goal knocked out Brunswick in the district semifinals.

Exactly 9:45 into the first half, he took a pass from Ian Gummo and lollipopped a shot over Shelby Edwards for the only goal Medina (14-1-5) needed.

For good measure, Prostor took a crossing pass from Parker Csiszar and headed into the right corner with 22:26 remaining and added the final nail on a pass from Gavin Csiszar five minutes later.

“I mean, it’s the moment,” Prostor said. “It’s the pressure. The team comes in with an 18-1 record. They’ve had a fantastic season. They have a player like Kevin Lemin, who scores 28 goals. It’s those moments, those big games. Coach Spelling always says big players step up in big games. I’d like to think I stepped up today.”

Prostor wasn’t the only one.

As has been the case in reaching three consecutive regional finals, sound defense played a huge role.

During Medina’s 2015 run, the Bees notched 11 shutouts. Last season, Medina picked up 14 en route to the state semifinals.

Olmsted Falls didn’t register a shot on goal, as Mike Kelly, Tom Guta, Andrew Horton and Brandon Leckie teamed with keeper Tyler Glasenapp to log the team’s 11th blanking.

That’s saying something considering Lemin (28 goals, 9 assists) is the Southwestern Conference Player of the Year and Olmsted Falls was averaging three goals per game.

“We had to rebuild, but we have guys that were ready to step up,” Glasenapp said. “Horton has been on varsity four years. Day 1 we might have been a little bit iffy, but as the season has progressed we’ve gotten progressively better.”

The shutout was Medina second straight and obtained a ton of momentum.

“It was a solid performance again,” Spelling said. “For my guys, it was like a walk in the park. They played very well. They communicated very well, calibrated well. They were helped by Steve Samuelson’s performance. Their major players didn’t have a kick on goal.”

The Bees will play Sylvania Northview (10-4-5) on Saturday in a rematch of last season’s Region 2 final. Medina won that game 3-1.

“Simon said it perfectly in the meeting we had after the game,” Prostor said. “Everybody stepped up, everybody played above their potential. It was absolutely fantastic.”
