Police warn businesses of Ohio Edison scam

MEDINA — At least one local business was scammed recently by an individual claiming to be a representative of Ohio Edison, police said.

A telephone scammer told a business owner he owes money on his electric bill and a technician was en route to disconnect the service. The scammer told the owner he only could accept Money Pak/Green Dot cards as payment.

The scammer intimidated the business owner and said payment was the only way to stop disconnection, police said.

The phone number associated with the scam appears to be legitimate, police said, and callers are put on hold.

If challenged, police said, a man with a heavy accent will reply with expletives and hang up.

Police said Sgt. Brett McNabb sent emails to area businesses warning about the scam.
