BEREA — Kellen Winslow’s 16-yard catch Monday night at the two-minute warning put the Browns within range for Phil Dawson’s winning 56-yard field goal. It also left the tight end with a shoulder injury.
Winslow fell on his right shoulder following the catch and was scheduled to undergo an MRI Tuesday afternoon or this morning. He had to reach low for the pass as he headed toward the sideline, then was hit by linebacker Paul Posluszny.
“We’re checking him out,” coach Romeo Crennel said of Winslow. “We’ll see if he’s going to be able to do much this week.”
Winslow played through a separated left shoulder for much of last season, so he expects to be able to play through this injury. He had three catches for 40 yards against the Bills.
o o o INJURY REPORT: Winslow was one of several players injured in the 29-27 win. Defensive end Shaun Smith (calf) left the game and didn’t return. He was scheduled for an MRI, and Crennel said he’s questionable for Sunday against Houston. Running backs Jerome Harrison (hamstring) and Jason Wright (stinger) left and didn’t return, as did safety Sean Jones (ankle). Nose tackle Shaun Rogers (shoulder), guard Eric Steinbach (oblique) and defensive end Corey Williams (shoulder) were sore after playing through injuries, while fullback Lawrence Vickers (ankle) is expected to return to practice after missing three games. “They will all get treatment and work their rehab and try to be out there on Sunday to play for us,” Crennel said. “Right now we don’t know exactly their status. We have to evaluate it as the week goes on.”
o o o DAWSON GETS HIS DUE: Crennel said it was an easy decision to let Dawson try the 56-yarder, even though it was a few yards beyond the limit Dawson set in warmups. “He felt good about it, I felt good about it, so we went ahead and did it,” Crennel said. “I can’t say enough about him. It was a pressure kick and he put it right through, with some distance to spare.” His teammates were appreciative. “Thank God for Mr. Automatic kicking that field goal, or else we would have been here sitting sad again,” linebacker Andra Davis said after the game.
o o o NO QUITTERS HERE: Crennel acknowledged the ugliness of the win, but complimented his players for fighting through the adversity. “Our guys hung in there and they fought. They never said never,” he said. “We fought till the end. Guys didn’t get depressed and didn’t go in the tank. They just played the game.” Crennel defended his players last week after running back Jamal Lewis and special teamer Joshua Cribbs said some of their teammates quit in the Denver loss. Crennel insisted no one gave up.
o o o BRADY, WEEK 2: Quarterback Brady Quinn’s second start wasn’t as smooth as his first. He went 14-for-36 for 185 yards and a 55.9 rating. He didn’t throw a touchdown or an interception. “He was tested a little more this week,” Crennel said. “He was able to hang in there and manage it and move us down and get us in position to kick the field goal at the end.” The Bills brought much more pressure than the Broncos did the week before. They sacked Quinn once, hit him five times and were especially effective bringing linebacker Kawika Mitchell on blitzes up the middle. “They were bringing it and putting it right in his face,” Crennel said. “He stayed composed, ran the offense and managed the game.”
o o o JEROME’S IMPACT: Harrison was once again effective in limited duty. He rushed three times for 80 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, and caught a pass for 21 yards before injuring the hamstring. “Jerome gave us a spark and really made a major contribution to help us win,” Crennel said. Harrison has averaged 10.4 yards on 20 carries and 14.7 yards on seven catches. Crennel was asked what keeps him from being an every-down back. “Jerome has a special ability and a talent,” he said. “We also have Jamal Lewis, who has special ability and talent. We have Jason Wright, who we use. We mix them all in. Jerome is very patient as far as waiting his turn and when he gets the opportunity, he’s trying to make the most of it. (Monday) night, he was tremendous.” Lewis has carried 185 times for 658 yards (3.6 per carry) and four touchdowns. He hasn’t had a 100-yard game.
o o o LET HIM GO: Rogers had another big game. He totaled six tackles, including one for a loss, and tipped a pass on the first play that Kamerion Wimbley intercepted. Rogers was being triple-teamed on that play, which is a regular occurrence. “It is amazing,” Crennel said. “If it takes three on him, that allows us to drop more guys in coverage. I know sometimes he gets frustrated by it, but he’s a team player and he’s helping us every way he can. He continues to show up and be a force there in the middle.” Rogers appears to get held regularly, but rarely gets the call. “Talk about a guy who should have a gripe,” Crennel said. “He should have a gripe. But if they don’t call it, there’s nothing you can do about it.”
