It’s final grade time in the wigwam for the Tribe — a team that finished in a disappointing third place in the American League Central Division after coming a win away from the World Series in 2007.
As you might guess, there were few model students, other than the obvious ones listed below:
Rafael Betancourt, relief pitcher
2008 stats: 3-4, 5.07 ERA, 4 saves
Grade: D
o Went from first to worst in the setup department after signing a new contract prior to the start of the season.
Asdrubal Cabrera, second base
2008 stats: .259, 6 HR, 47 RBI
Grade: C+
o Bounced back from a miserable offensive start that got him sent to the minors to finish the season in promising fashion.
Fausto Carmona, starting pitcher 2008 stats: 8-7, 5.44 ERA
Grade: C-
o Was derailed by a hip injury that cost him two months, but didn’t exactly tear it up upon his return to the rotation.
Jamey Carroll, infielder
2008 stats: .277, 1 HR, 36 RBI
Grade: B
o Played more than your average utility man but wasn’t over his head in a starting role.
Shin-Soo Choo, outfielder
2008 stats: .309, 14 HR, 66 RBI
Grade: A- o Made it back from Tommy John surgery to give the Indians something to look forward to next year.
David Dellucci, outfielder
2008 stats: .238, 11 HR, 47 RBI
Grade: D
o Indians fans only have to watch this guy for one more season, three more than they should have endured.
Ben Francisco, outfielder
2008 stats: .266, 15 HR, 54 RBI
Grade: C+
o Was somewhat of a defensive liability and his offense tailed off at the end of the year, but he showed enough to warrant another look next season.
Ryan Garko, first base
2008 stats: .273, 14 HR, 90 RBI
Grade: B-
o Put up respectable numbers but lagged when the Indians needed him most, and he’s still nowhere near a top-shelf defender at first.
Franklin Gutierrez, outfield
2008 stats: .248, 8 HR, 41 RBI
Grade: D+ o Was expected to make strides this season but instead took a huge step back, with defense as his only saving grace.
Travis Hafner, designated hitter
2008 stats: .197, 5 HR, 24 RBI
Grade: Inc.
o A shoulder injury saved Hafner from what appeared to be the start of another sub-par year from the club’s top run producer.
Masa Kobayashi, relief pitcher
2008 stats: 4-5, 4.53 ERA
Grade: C o Far East import was nothing special, which might explain why the budget-constrained Indians were able to land him in the first place.
Aaron Laffey, starting pitcher 2008 stats: 5-7, 4.23 ERA
Grade: C
o Filled in nicely for an injury-depleted rotation for a spell before somewhat surprisingly getting sent to the minors for the remainder of the year.
Cliff Lee, starting pitcher
2008 stats: 22-3, 2.54 ERA
Grade: A o A shocking Cy Young season put this left-hander at the top of the Indians’ class this year.
Jensen Lewis, relief pitcher
2008 stats: 0-4, 3.82 ERA, 13 saves
Grade: B o Traveled back and forth between the minors and majors before assuming the closer role and performing better than anyone else the Indians employed.
Andy Marte, third base 2008 stats: .221, 3 HR, 17 RBI
Grade: F
o Blew the opportunity to solidify himself as the starter at third base and is all but a lock to begin next year somewhere else.
Edward Mujica, relief pitcher 2008 stats: 3-2, 6.75 ERA
Grade: D
o Fooled the Indians into believing he could be effective on the big league level for a spell before returning to form.
Victor Martinez, catcher/first base
2008 stats: .278, 2 HR, 35 RBI
Grade: Inc.
o Dealt with injuries all season long, but was displaying an alarming lack of power to start the year before landing on the disabled list.
Jhonny Peralta, shortstop
2008 stats: .276, 23 HR, 89 RBI
Grade: B
o Started slowly but finished the year as the team’s cleanup, doing a respectable job in the high-profiled spot in the batting order.
Rafael Perez, relief pitcher 2008 stats: 4-4, 3.54 ERA, 2 saves
Grade: B-
o Was one of the few reliable relievers but wasn’t nearly as effective as he was during a breakout season last year.
Juan Rincon, relief pitcher 2008 stats: 3-3, 5.86 ERA
Grade: D
o This comeback project produced few favorable results and most likely ended with the season’s final out.
Kelly Shoppach, catcher 2008 stats: .261, 21 HR, 55 RBI
Grade: A-
o Began the season as a backup but finished as one of the American League’s best run producers at his position.
Grady Sizemore, center fielder
2008 stats: .268, 33 HR, 90 RBI
Grade: A-
o The only thing the Indians’ best overall player didn’t do this year was hit for average.
Jeremy Sowers, starting pitcher 2008 stats: 4-9, 5.58 ERA
Grade: D
o Failed to impress again this, with half of his rookie season in 2006 serving as the only promising production the club has seen since drafting him.
Jake Westbrook, starting pitcher
2008 stats: 1-2, 3.12 ERA
Grade: Inc.
o Tommy John surgery sapped nearly all of this reliable right-hander’s season, putting his career in limbo.
Eric Wedge, manager
2008 stats: 81-81, third place
Grade: C+
o The team’s finish doesn’t warrant a better mark, but Wedge kept a makeshift club competitive until the bitter end.
Mark Shapiro, general manager
2008 stats: 81-81, third place
Grade: D
o The GM stood pat in the offseason and whether it was warranted or not, it still cost his team dearly when injuries hit early and often.
Larry Dolan, owner 2008 stats: 81-81, third place
Grade: F
o Now that his son is pretty much running the show, it’s Team Tightpockets returning to the usual F-bomb in the ownership department after spending little this offseason and watching another star — CC Sabathia — skip town on its World Series-less watch.
