Soccer roundup: Bees open with win

MEDINA — Two second half goals by Sarah Flanders lifted Medina’s girls soccer team to a 4-2 win Saturday over Pickerington North, a Division I state semifinalist last season.

 Flanders’ goal with 14:27 left in the non-conference tilt tied the score at 2-2, and her goal five minutes later gave the Bees (2-0) a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Medina’s Jillian Graff assisted on Flanders’ first goal and also found the back of the net twice to topple the Panthers (1-1).

Warren Howland 3, Buckeye 0 YORK TWP. — The Bucks’ defense was no match for the Tigers’ attack in the second half of this non-conference game. Buckeye (1-1) took only three shots in its first defeat of the season. All of the tallies by Howland (3-0) were scored in the second half. Abby Nicholas broke the scoreless tie with 23:35 remaining and teammate Olivia Nicholas added another almost three minutes later.

 

Highland 3, Nordonia 1 GRANGER TWP. — Sarah Medzuich scored two goals and Lindsay Hanmey added another in the Hornets’ first win of the season in this non-league battle. Highland (1-0-1) outshot the Knights (0-2) 16-3.

 

Boys soccer North Royalton 2, Medina 0 NORTH ROYALTON — Two first-half goals by the Bears (1-0) buried the Bees (1-1) in a non-league game. The Bears jumped out to an early lead with Shawn Gross and Derek Porvasnik both netting goals in the opening half. Medina goalkeeper Matt Hedberg had six saves.

 

Cuyahoga Falls 5, Brunswick 4 CUYAHOGA FALLS — Christian Earnest scored a goal with 3:21 remaining in the game to break a 4-4 tie and give Cuyahoga Falls (1-0-1) its first win and the Blue Devils (2-1) their first loss. Earnest also scored a goal in the first half and added an assist. Brunswick’s goals were scored by Cody Buhrman, Jordan Smerekovsky, Cody Smith and Jeff Kravetz. Blue Devils goalkeeper John Peterenko had seven saves.
