BEREA — The third preseason game is the one in which the starters get the most playing time as a dress rehearsal for the regular season.
The Browns (0-2), however, will be without many of their starters when they head to Detroit on Saturday.
Running back Jamal Lewis (hamstring) was added to the injury list Wednesday and didn’t practice. He joined quarterback Derek Anderson (concussion), kick returner Joshua Cribbs (ankle), safety Brodney Pool (concussion) and linebacker Willie McGinest (groin) as casualties of the 37-34 loss to the Giants on Monday night. None of the players made an appearance at practice.
Because there are only two practices — Wednesday and today — between games, none of the injured players are expected to play against the Lions.
“It would be tough for them to make Saturday,” coach Romeo Crennel said.
Anderson suffered the concussion on a sack. He also bruised his hand, but Crennel said that’s not an issue. He also dismissed a rumor that Anderson has a separated shoulder.
“I know nothing about a shoulder,” Crennel said. “The concussion is the thing we’re dealing with.
“Usually on a concussion, sometimes you’re a little sensitive to light. We’re going to let them rest for a day or so.”
Brady Quinn will start at quarterback, Jason Wright at running back, Mike Adams at safety and Syndric Steptoe at kick returner. Rookie Alex Hall lined up at McGinest’s spot Wednesday, but David McMillan could also fill in.
o o o MORE INJURIES: Receiver Braylon Edwards has yet to have stitches removed from his foot and will miss his second preseason game. It sounds unlikely he’ll return for the finale Aug. 28. “We’re trying to keep Braylon off his feet so he doesn’t reopen that wound,” Crennel said. “He’s making progress. The wound is healing. But we’re going to be a little cautious with him. At his position where he runs and cuts, we don’t want him to break it open.” Linebacker Leon Williams, who suffered a neck stinger Monday, practiced and expects to play versus the Lions. Defensive lineman Shaun Rogers (knee) and receiver Kevin Kasper (hamstring) returned to practice.
o o o CORNER ADDED: The Browns have been looking for depth and experience at cornerback all camp. They acquired some Wednesday by trading a seventh-round draft pick in 2009 for Dolphins cornerback Travis Daniels. To make room on the roster, cornerback Mil’Von James was released. Daniels, who must pass a physical, is 6-foot-1, 195 pounds and a fourth-round pick of Miami out of LSU in 2005. He has played in 44 games, including 25 starts, and has 125 tackles, three interceptions and 19 passes defensed. “He’s got experience and we needed a little bit of experience,” Crennel said. Daniels has played cornerback and safety and had a career-high 14 starts as a rookie. He started five games last year.
o o o WHO’S NO. 3?: With Anderson out, the Browns are down to Quinn and Ken Dorsey at quarterback. Crennel said there are no plans to bring in another quarterback, so the coaches will make an emergency plan. “We’ve got several guys on the team who have been quarterbacks in high school,” he said. Punter and Bay High graduate Dave Zastudil, Steptoe and tight end Darnell Dinkins seem the likeliest options.
o o o WHAT PUNCH? Linebacker Andra Davis was penalized 15 yards for what the referee called taking a swing and missing. Davis denied it. “I didn’t swing at him. I didn’t punch anybody,” he said. Davis was coy about his role, but admitted a confrontation with Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. “There was a lot of head-butting going on and you always catch the second person,” he said.
