By BRIAN DULIK Staff Writer CLEVELAND — While LeBron James is spending the summer playing for USA Basketball, two of his prep teammates will be taking their shot at joining him on the Cavaliers. Forward Romeo Travis and guard Dru Joyce III, who helped James win three state championships at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High, were among the athletes invited to play on Cleveland’s team at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Also named to the 13-player squad Tuesday were former Cavaliers power forward Robert “Tractor” Traylor, rookies J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson, as well as current Cleveland players Lance Allred and Billy Thomas. The team will play five games in Sin City next week on the campus of UNLV. The 6-foot-7 Travis and 6-0 Joyce both attended college at Akron and made their pro basketball debuts overseas last winter. They went undrafted and are not considered strong prospects, but their close relationship with “King James” makes them two of the more intriguing members of the Cavaliers’ summer squad. Ditto for the 6-9 Traylor, who last played in an NBA game three years ago and is attempting a comeback from heart problems, weight issues and legal troubles. At 31 years old, he is still capable of playing at a good level and has a great opportunity to resume his career, which has included stops in Cleveland in 2000-2001 and 2004-2005. Two other NBA veterans who could play their way onto the Cavaliers’ regular season roster are 6-9 forward Wayne Simien (Heat) and 6-2 guard Will Conroy (Grizzlies, Clippers). Rounding out the invitees are rookies Mike Green (6-1 guard from Butler), Romel Beck (6-7 guard from UNLV), Yohanne Sangare (6-4 guard from France) and Clay Tucker (6-3 guard from Wisconsin-Milwaukee). Cleveland’s summer league slate begins Monday against the Knicks, then features contests Wednesday (Rockets), Friday (Wizards), Saturday (Hornets) and Sunday (Bucks). Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester will pilot the team.
