Tennis roundup: Colts earn share of SL crown

May 6th, 2008 · No Comments

MEDINA — Cloverleaf’s boys tennis team made school history Monday by earning a share of its first Suburban League championship.

The Colts finished second to Green by a single point at the SL Tournament in Medina, but tied for first in the overall conference standings as a result of winning the regular-season title.

“We’re thrilled to be SL co-champs,” Cloverleaf coach Brenda Hewit said. “We would have liked to have won it outright, but it was very close between us, Green and Tallmadge. It’s great to at least share in the overall conference championship.”

League co-champs Green (33) and Cloverleaf (32) claimed all five individual titles in holding off Tallmadge (30), Copley (24) and Revere (22) at the SLT. Highland (17), Barberton (13) and Wadsworth (12) rounded out the field.

The Colts, however, took home the three biggest prizes as Ethan Dunbar, Parker Hewit and Jarred Gable swept the singles championships on the warm spring afternoon.

Dunbar, a sophomore, earned SL MVP honors for the second straight season by blitzing Barberton’s Bastain Kistenfeger 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles final.

Hewit, a senior, routed Green’s Mitch Plum 6-3, 6-1 at second singles, while junior Gable knocked off Tallmadge’s Joe Hadley 6-1, 6-4 for top honors at third singles.

Cloverleaf also got a fourth-place showing from Matt Horner and Grey Wilde at first doubles, and a sixth from Drew Detwiler and Taylor Harrington at the second spot.

Those results put an exclamation point on a season that the Colts will never forget.

“We’ll have our first banner for our new courts,” coach Hewit proudly pointed out.

Highland sophomore Clay Schilling also had a strong day, finishing fourth at third singles, while teammates Cory Tuttle and Brandon Hissong were fifth at second doubles.

Wadsworth’s top finisher was Ryan LaDu, who placed sixth at third singles.

In another match:

Solon 5, Medina 0 SOLON — Comets star Dylan Schrode defeated Lucas Walters of the Bees 6-1, 6-0 at first singles as Solon won this Northeast Ohio Conference match. Medina’s second doubles team of Clint Lehotan and Jordan Johnston won three games to account for their team’s best performance.
