Day passes are available for $5; a six-visit punch card is $18. General information: You do not have to be a Brunswick resident or member of the center to participate in seniors’ programs like nutrition, cards, clubs, exercise videos, movies, etc. You must be a member to walk the track, use the pool, gym or exercise equipment.
Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour on Nov. 4 when Daylight Savings Time ends.
Thank you to all who took the time to fill out the 2008 travel survey used to plan next year’s trips. The 2008 list is available at the Brunswick Senior Info Fair on Jan. 18, the first day you can sign up for the trips. Watch for fliers with more details. John Piepsney, the center’s superintendent, asks that senior travelers park behind the building in the rows farthest from the building. For questions regarding this change, call him at 330-273-8000.
The Medina County Health Department is giving flu shots from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 6 at the center. There is no charge for Medicare/Medicaid patients. Be sure to bring your Medi-care/Medicaid card. Fees for non-Medicare/Medicaid patients are $25 for Medina County residents and $30 for out-of-county residents. This is an open, walk-in clinic with no reservations, but a check-in system will be used. Bring your driver’s license or Ohio state I.D. card. Drive-up service is available. Don’t forget to vote either before or after getting your shot. The polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Registration is now being taken for the Dick Radcliffe Memorial Fall Pinochle Tournament on Nov. 8. Register with a partner or as an individual up to Nov. 6 at the front desk. If you do not have a partner, one will be assigned.
It’s that time of the year when we start thinking of Christmas crafts and gifts. Come to the center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 to discover bargains and handmade treasures of all kinds.
At 3 p.m. Nov. 11, bring your grandchildren to enjoy the Magic Carpet Theatre presention of “The Adventures of Dr. Dolittle.” Advance tickets are $7 for adults and $5.50 for children 15 and younger. Add $1 more if you purchase them at the door.
Don’t forget the center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22. Enjoy the day with family or friends, The Medina Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert of holiday selections at 3 p.m. Nov. 25.
Area seniors are welcome to join us for a Thanksgiving Potluck at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 26. Sign up at the front desk or call the center by Nov. 23. List the dish you are bringing to share. Plates, utensils and beverages are provided. Come early and play cards or games and/or stay to play the free bingo sponsored by Pearlview Health Care Center at 1:30 p.m.
Bocce ball ended for the season. Moving indoors, a good substitute is the Corn Toss Game, a game of skill where bean bags filled with corn are tossed at a board with a hole in it. Played with one or two man teams, the game’s winner is determined by total points scored. Get in practice over the winter and wow your kids and grandkids at family picnics next year. Come to the center at 1 p.m. Nov. 9 to learn to play the game.
Only two people were interested in a wood carving program. If anyone is interested in joining or teaching a beginning carving class, call the center with your name and phone number.
Don Leahy reports 23 members of the fishing group rented a charter boat out of Vermillion for a day of perch fishing. They caught 232 fish. Members are looking forward to learning fly fishing in the spring and making their own lures. New members are always welcome.
Cooking program Sheila Klimas, OSU Extension, Medina County, will present her next nutrition program, “Hot Meals for Cold Days,” at 11 a.m. Nov. 28.
Couples dinner out The couples dinner out group will meet at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Italian Village on Pearl Road in Strongsville. Sign up at the center or call by Nov. 16 for reservations.
Health clinics and programs o Southwest General Community Outreach Nurse Program will provide blood pressure checks (includes glucose screening if requested, no fasting), 9 a.m. to noon on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. o A nurse from Pearlview Care Center will do blood pressure checks from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 20.
Lunch & Lyrics Pack a lunch or bring fast food and your singing voice at noon the first Monday of each month to Meeting Room No. 1 for Lunch & Lyrics. Join the gang in singing the old tunes. Songbooks are provided.
Nutrition site The center is the nutrition site for Brunswick. Congregate meals are available at 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. You must register first with the Office for Older Adults by calling 330-225-7100 and asking for the office.
R.O.M.E.O. Club The R.O.M.E.O. Club (Retired Older Men Eat Out), for single, married and divorced men, meet at 11 a.m. the second Friday every month at a local restaurant. The Nov. 9 destination is Bob Evans on state Route 303, in Brunswick. Sign up in advance at the front desk or by calling the center.
Single Ladies dinner out The Single Ladies dinner out group meets at 5 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month. On Nov. 7, they will dine at Bianca’s on Pearl Road in Brunswick. Any single, divorced or widowed lady is welcome to join the group. Call the center for more information and reservations by the Monday prior to the dinner.
Trips The travel program is winding down for 2007. As of this writing two seats (one room) have become available for the Nov. 11-16 Branson trip. Call the center if you’re interested. o Dec. 5-6 — Niagara Falls, Canada, to see two shows and the Christmas lights ($264, double occupancy). It includes the bus, driver’s tip, a room at the Best Western in Canadaz, baggage handling and taxes, dinner and breakfast with gratuities, Daniel O’Donnell and Charlie Prose tickets and the Festival of Lights. o Dec. 16 — Cleveland Orchestra Christmas concert at 2 p.m. at Severance Hall ($54, includes the bus and concert). o Dec. 18 — Kingwood Center, a tour of Herlihy House, shopping at All-Ways Christmas, Malabar Farm, dinner at Malabar Farm Restaurant and Christmas Wunderland lights display. ($61, includes the driver’s tip)
